Why Should I Attend JRCLS Events?

I just returned from attending a JRCLS chapter event.  It was a quarterly CLE luncheon sponsored by the Phoenix Arizona Chapter.  It was well attended, the chicken served wasn't too tough and the presentation was very impressive and enjoyable (an Ethics presentation by Professor Marianne Jennings).

While there I thought it might be fun to talk to some of the women who attended and ask them why they participate in JRCLS events.  I talked to six women.

So, how did they respond to the question "What benefits do you receive from attending JRCLS events?" Let's find out.

Brooktynn Blood (graduated from BYU in 2008 and is practicing at Lewis & Roca): some of the benefits to me are catching up with old classmates and the CLE;

Megan Nelson (a 1L at ASU): I enjoy meeting interesting, good people; as a 1L, it is particularly helpful for me to make good connections here;

Amy Swaner (graduated from BYU in 2000 and currently has her own practice, Law Offices of Amy Kunz Swaner): the topics and speakers are fabulous;  I always gain some knowledge or insight from the luncheons;

Charlotte Johnson (graduated from BYU in 2006 and is practicing at Bivens & Associates): the networking that occurs and the CLE are a great benefit; and, I enjoy exposure to a broad spectrum of law and practices;

Sheryl Andrews (graduated from BYU in 1992 and is practicing at Lake & Cobb): I gain insight and the networking is great;

DeeAn Gillsepie (graduated from BYU in 1984 and is practicing at DeeAn Gillespie & Associates): I benefit from associating with excellent professionals who share similar values.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about the benefits of attending JRCLS events.  If anyone reading would like to add to the list (use the Comment section below), we'd love to hear your thoughts as well.

Hope to see you soon at a JRCLS event!

  2. Thanks for this! It is great to see the face of our women colleagues and read what they have to say! I think it makes us feel like we know who is "out there!"

  3. I'm glad your chapter is so friendly to women. My local chapter is most definitely not. The men act like I have cooties and will try to avoid talking to me for fear that I'll somehow corrupt them with my female presence. Women have stopped attending because we're all so sick of being treated so poorly and having to deal with such apalling sexism. And I don't really have the energy to fight it right now.
