Powerful Beyond Measure

(Written by Desiree Nordstrom, as WIL Committee member.)

Marianne Williamson said “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?”

Powerful beyond measure. Does this thought seem to light a fire in you too? As women trained in the law, we know we can use this power in court, in practice and in advocacy.  But this power is meant for all aspects of our lives.

As women of religion, we exercise power when we serve and teach others. I had the opportunity to serve as a leader for the youth of our congregation a few years ago.  I remember explaining to the young women that they have the ability to highly influence the boys around them.  Teen boys fawn over girls and if those girls set the bar high, the boys will rise to it. Those girls can have a powerful impact on many. I did not realize the power I had at a young age.

I also see power as a mother.  The future of mankind lies in our children. Raising our children to be confident, intelligent and spiritually strong people is such an important job. A quote found in my 3 year old daughter’s room says, “Let her sleep, for when she wakes, she will move mountains.”  And I believe that power is in her.  It is in all of us.

Please share…where in your lives do you see this power manifest? Where do you see this power in other women who surround you?

  1. Thank you for this post - it was very refreshing.

I see this power with the youth in their scriptures. It is very inspiring to see each generation of youth dig just a little deeper in their scriptures and do just a little better each year at memorizing them and applying them. The youth were/are truly ready to start coming out in the thousands and be ready to be on the Lords errand.

I see this power in all the hundreds of adults who prepared their lives in a way to be temple presidents and mission presidents and the countless others who have set their lives up financially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually to serve.

And most definitely, I see our young women as a very powerful force for good. They will have to be very, very bold. Our schools, communities, work places and government needs their power.
